SeaShield Systems Provide Long-Term Protection for Jetty Piles at Ullapool Harbour

In 2020, Shearwater Marine Services were awarded a contract to install protection for jetty piles at Ullapool Harbour in the Scottish Highlands, on behalf of The Ullapool Harbour Trust.

As consulting engineers on the project, Wallace Stone specified the use of SeaShield™ Systems supplied by Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd to protect the jetty piles. SeaShield Systems have an extensive history of providing long-term corrosion protection to marine structures.

Shearwater Marine Services used a combination of the SeaShield 2000FD™ and SeaShield 70™ Systems on the piles and various supporting crossbeams on the structure. SeaShield 2000FD consists of Denso Paste S105™, Denso Marine Piling Tape™ and an outer HDPE jacket, which is hydraulically tensioned before being secured with stainless steel fixings. The SeaShield 70 System was used to protect the crossbeams and is an excellent option on areas where piles have obstructions. This system consists of Denso Paste S105™, Denso Profiling Mastic™, Denso Marine Piling Tape™ and Denso Glass Outerwrap 70™.

Denso P2 System Used in Refurbishment of Old Water Pumping Station

As part of United Utilities water quality improvement programme, JMC North West Ltd, on behalf of NMCN, recently completed works to bury the above ground timing loop at the Pex Hill Service Reservoir. The challenge was to provide a durable, reliable corrosion prevention solution to protect over 90 double flanged joints prior to full encapsulation. To provide this high level of protection, JMC North West Ltd turned to Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd for their services.

Winn & Coales recommended their Denso P2 System, proven to effectively protect ferrous pipes, joints and fittings from the costly effects of corrosion. Fully compliant with the P2 Civil Engineering Specifications for the Water Industry (7th Edition), this time-proven system can be easily applied on-site before the pipe is buried – providing long-term corrosion prevention for the project at Pex Hill. The Denso P2 System incorporates Denso Primer D, Denso Profiling Mastic and Densoclad Tape. Training on how to apply the system was provided, on-site, by two members of the Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd team.

SeaShield 2000FD Protects Tiree Pierhead

George Leslie Ltd were recently awarded the contract for refurbishment works on the Tiree Pierhead on the Island of Tiree. Due to the awkward shape of some of the jetty piles, the required surface preparation needed for a protective liquid coating system was not possible. They therefore discussed an alternative method for providing corrosion prevention to the jetty piles with Winn and Coales (Denso) Ltd.

Winn and Coales (Denso) Ltd proposed the use of the Denso SeaShield 2000FD System with additional fillet pieces to accommodate the awkward shape of the piles. The Denso SeaShield 2000FD system, which had been used on a similar application previously, provides long-term corrosion prevention without the need for intensive surface preparation, thus providing an effective solution for use on the piles in their exposed environment.

Oyster Farm Reaps the Benefits of Denso Tape

Woodstown Bay Shellfish (WBS) Ltd, based in the South East of Ireland, run one of Ireland’s largest oyster growing and exporting companies. The family-owned business uses several tractors on an inter-tidal area of Woodstown Beach where the oysters are farmed in the ‘A’ class waters of the Waterford Estuary. The oysters are harvested by the tractors and trailers and transported back to the WBS factory in Dunmore East Harbour for processing.

In order to protect critical parts of the machinery from the corrosive marine environment, and to make sensitive electronics watertight, WBS Ltd have found that Denso Tape performs better than anything else they have tried over more than 20 years. Its versatile nature, along with being long-lasting and easy-to-apply in less than ideal application conditions, makes it an extremely reliable and cost-effective solution to WBS Ltd’s problems.

Denso SeaShield Protection at Douglas Harbour I.O.M.

Winn and Coales (Denso) Ltd recently supplied SeaShield Systems for the protection of Marine Piles at Douglas Harbour on the Isle of Man.

The initial contract secured by BAM was for the protection of 16 Piles on Berth number 5 and Bam’s sub-contractor, Teignmouth Maritime Services installed the SeaShield 2000FD and Seashield 80 Systems to the piles.

In addition to the original contract, BAM negotiated with the client to install additional protection using the SeaShield 100 System to Walkway Piles which had been partially protected with the system several years earlier.

Denso Protection System for National Grid LNG Tank Bases

Winn & Coales Denso Tank Base Protection System is being used at the Isle of Grain National Grid site on four of their LNG storage tanks. The installation work was carried out by contractors JPV Painters of Brentwood.

To meet various operating conditions at the Isle of Grain National Grid site, the Denso Tank Base system was chosen to give effective protection.

Following surface preparation, Denso Hi-Tack Primer and Denso Primer D were applied. Densyl Mastic was then applied in the gap between the tank and the base. This not only provides a sealant between the concrete and tank base to prevent entrapment of water, but also a smooth profile when applying the following Denso Hi-Tack Tape. A single layer of Denso Ultraseal RT Tape was applied and then finally a topcoat.

The Denso Tank Base Protection System is flexible enough to move with the tank when it gets filled and emptied and provides a tough outer armouring. The highly weather resistant system provides a long-lasting solution to Tank Base problems.
