Project Overview

Johannesburg Water Inspection Services carried out a condition assessment on an existing buried pipeline installed in 1984.

After more than 40 years in service, inspection confirmed that the steel substrate remained in excellent condition beneath the original Denso Petrolatum Tape System, demonstrating the long-term performance of the corrosion prevention system.

Based on these findings, Johannesburg Water instructed the contractor to re-wrap the inspected section using the original Denso Petrolatum corrosion prevention system, upgraded with the Denso PVC HD Outerwrap.

Scope of work:
Remove the existing wrapping and re-wrap the full 20m section of 18-inch pipeline using Denso Petrolatum Tape and Denso PVC HD Outerwrap.

Why the Denso System?
The original Denso corrosion prevention system demonstrated outstanding performance for over four decades. Its proven long-term effectiveness gave both the client and consulting engineers the confidence to specify the same corrosion prevention technology for the rehabilitation of the pipeline.

Surface Preparation
Remove the existing tape wrapping system, followed by scraping any residual compound from the steel surface using a suitable scraper. Complete the surface preparation by solvent cleaning the steel to remove all remaining compound.

Application Procedure
• Apply Denso Priming Solution by brush or roller.
• Spiral wrap Denso Petrolatum Tape at 55% overlap.
• Spiral wrap Denso PVC HD Outerwrap at 55% overlap.
• Combined system thickness: approximately 3300 microns DFT.

Project Impact

With more than 90 years of international proven performance, the original Denso Petrolatum Tape System once again demonstrated its exceptional long-term durability.
After 42 years in service, the pipeline remained in excellent condition. Following rehabilitation, the Denso Petrolatum Tape System with Denso PVC HD Outerwrap will continue providing long-term corrosion prevention for this critical Johannesburg Water asset, which supplies water to more than 23,000 people.
